Open Sessions

Where anything goes...
What is an Open Session?

In an “open” session, tunes are typically played at a faster tempo, up to full speed and sometimes beyond.  There may be a “lead” player that tends to start a tune if nobody can think of something, but for the most part each player starts the tune or set of tunes of their choice and (this is very important) at their own tempo. There are no predefined sets of tunes to be played every time, though there may be some tunes that tend to be played every session.

A truly open session is open to everyone, and players are very friendly and welcoming to newcomers. Even if you only know a couple of tunes, there’s no reason not to come and play what you know, at a pace that is comfortable to you.  The other players should follow along and respect the tempo you set.  If they play tunes you don’t know, listen and watch how they’re played, take note of the names of the tunes you like, and practice them later.
